CLEARPLAY URGES PASSAGE OF FAMILY MOVIE ACT

Movie filtering bill likely to come before Senate in November.

Salt Lake City, Nov 3, 2004 – ClearPlay Inc. today urged members of the U.S. Senate to support the Family Movie Act in the November session. The Family Movie Act, which was introduced as HR 4077 by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) would affirm the rights of families to skip or mute over unwanted movie content in their homes. ClearPlay provides technology that filters graphic violence, nudity and profanity from DVD movies played in the home.

“We urge Senators from both parties to pass this important legislation that protects the rights of families,” said ClearPlay CEO Bill Aho. “The Family Movie Act is about moms, dads and kids. It’s about who decides what can and cannot be seen by your family in your home.”

In 2002, eight major Hollywood Studios, the Directors Guild of America and a group of movie directors filed suit against ClearPlay and other companies in its category. The lawsuit claims that studio copyright protection should prohibit companies like ClearPlay from providing parental control filtering technology for families to use in their home, with standard DVD’s that have been legally purchased or rented. This litigation has had a negative impact on the filtering industry. The Family Movie Act would end what could be many more years of legal assaults by Hollywood in an attempt to suppress the industry.

“We know that many concerned parents have already contacted their Senators,” said Aho, “and we encourage more to do the same. With enough support, this bill will pass in November.”
