Thomson contract issues with Nissim not a deterrent.
ClearPlay Inc., the leader in DVD movie filtering, today
announced that it will continue to expand its business both domestically and
internationally, despite recent legal exchanges between Nissim Corporation and
Thomson, which have resulted in RCA temporarily discontinuing the ClearPlay
feature in its U.S. models.
ClearPlay emphatically states that its technology does not infringe on Nissim’s
patents. “Nissim is alleging that we infringe on patents that don’t even apply
to DVD,” says Matthew Jarman, one of the founders of ClearPlay. “Unfortunately,
Thomson had an unrelated licensing agreement with Nissim which was a potential
concern to them. These legal issues will be sorted out and we will move on.”
RCA was the first company to launch DVD players with ClearPlay Filters, with
distribution in Wal-Mart, Kmart and other retailers. The launch has been
successful and response to the product has been extremely positive. ClearPlay
has been featured on major media across the country and has been endorsed by
multiple family and parenting advocates and organizations.
Nissim founder Max Abecassis has contacted ClearPlay in the past to pursue
business and licensing relationships. “Nissim didn’t appear to have any DVD
product or any marketable technology,” said Aho. Further, the Nissim website
describes using its product to provide easy access to adult subjects, including
fetishes. “ClearPlay’s technology will never be used to facilitate pornography
or adult content,” added Aho. “ClearPlay provides valuable tools for parents
and families to filter out graphic violence, sex and profanity.”
ClearPlay will continue to develop and support filters for the RCA players.
Additional ClearPlay-enabled products are scheduled for U.S. introduction later
this year. International expansion will begin in 2005.
About ClearPlay:
ClearPlay Inc., founded in 1999, develops advanced parental control
technologies for consumer electronic products, including DVD players and
recorders, TV’s, cable and set-top boxes, digital video recorders, etc. The
company’s first product allows consumers to view DVDs, purchased or rented
through conventional retailers, free of unwanted content. It gives consumers
the ability to skip and mute over graphic violence, sex, nudity and profanity
if they choose. ClearPlay filters can be purchased at retail, by subscription
and over the Internet, and do not touch, alter or change the DVD in any way.
The technology can also be applied to video on demand.
